Work

01 · WORK

Designing better conditions for children to communicate.

My work sits at the intersection of speech and language therapy prevention, community and design.

Alongside clinical practice, I’m interested in what happens when we look beyond individual intervention and consider the environments, relationships and systems that shape children’s opportunities to communicate.

Much of this work is still evolving. This is a collection of projects, approaches and learning from practice.

Small changes can begin in one interaction, one setting or one community, and teach us something about the wider system.

COMMUNICATION FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES

Taking communication support beyond traditional settings

Prevention · Community · Co-design · Population health

An NHS project exploring how everyday community spaces can create better conditions for children’s communication.

Working with libraries, family hubs and other places used by children and families, the project takes a preventative approach: listening to communities, identifying barriers and working alongside staff to develop practical changes that can be embedded into everyday spaces.

The work is helping me explore a question that increasingly shapes my practice:

What might speech and language therapy look like when we design around communities, rather than waiting for children to reach services?

BEST START IN SPEECH, LANGUAGE & COMMUNICATION

Strengthening communication in the early years

Early years · Prevention · Workforce development · Evaluation

Work with early years practitioners to strengthen the everyday environments, interactions and opportunities that support children's speech, language and communication.

The programme has included training, practice-based support, resources and work alongside settings to translate speech and language therapy knowledge into approaches that can become part of everyday early years practice.

It has also prompted a wider question for me:

How do we move from delivering good interventions to creating the conditions in which good practice can take root?
